Our last trip to NYC yielded lots of cool finds, one of which was Bowery Lane Bicycles. Made from U.S. steel, BLB hand crafts each vintage workman style bike right in the city. Available in single or 3 speed, these bikes are comfort inspired cruisers for the urban rider or daily commuter. Basic single speed configuration starts at $595.00, add $100.00 for the internal hub 3 speed.

Crate Denim: Narrow Straight (pictured washed, MT carries the dark indigo raw)
Crate Denim. Made in L.A. Each pair is “hand touched” by someone in the Crate office, weather it is sewing the pockets, attaching the antique metal buttons or cutting the fabric. Each pair is fabricated using vintage “deadstock” denim, that is, denim woven years ago for brands like Levi Strauss, Wrangler and Lee. At MT we carry the “narrow straight” fit in a deep indigo raw. What do we like about these aside from the fit, the fabric and the heritage? How about the price: $125.00.

It was a hazy summer day. The clear blue sky let the sun beat through the forest canopy. As I trudged through the pine needles and the ferns and the gnarled undergrowth, I remember thinking it looked like stained glass. Every so often the wind would rustle the high standing pines or balsams or firs and rays of sunlight would shoot down. I wasn’t really paying attention to rays of light however, I was fourteen years old and in the middle of an adventure.
That summer my best friend Will and I would traverse nearly every acre of forest in Whitefield, Maine. We would trespass through logging roads, sneak out late at night to light lanterns in long forgotten cemeteries, and at one point build a small raft which now as it so happens, lies at the bottom of small bog.
Much to the chagrin of my Mother, I destroyed nearly every piece of clothing I owned that summer. Holes were ripped, buttons were lost, and grass stains administered in the highest degree. One day after falling through a derelict beaver dam into a small river still swollen from the Spring melt I realized that while everything else was in tatters, my jeans had weathered the summer’s high jinks as well as I had. They had been baked in the sun, covered in mud, pine pitch, beaten with sticks and rocks and nearly drowned, but stood up like leather. On that long, soggy walk home (I had lost a shoe to the river) and during the particularly long lectures by both Will’s and my parents, I kept my eyes down, staring into the resilient and still damp denim fibers, remembering every step, fall and mile walked in them and tried not to smile.
Jeans have become an indelible part of our culture. There is something remarkably American about a pair of good, tough dungarees. At McKenzie Tribe, I try to carry the best I can find when it comes to quality, fit and wash. That is why I am pleased to announce the arrival of Jean Shop Jeans. American made raw denim jeans from New York. So if you’re looking for the right fit and feel, and for a pair of jeans that will last longer than a season or a style, stop in or give a call. We have them in stock. In early Spring we will also be carrying Evisu Jeans, some of the best in washed and raw selvedge denim.
